Drawing from accounts of his own process of discovery, Dustin Dahlin introduces readers to the simple yet transformative (and biblical) principle of practicing militant thankfulness. This book is practical and helpful for anyone who wants to break free from the world’s downward spin cycle of dissatisfaction and discontentment. It teaches you how the practice of thankfulness has the power to transform your relationship with God, combat stress and anxiety, redirect your thinking, and keep you in step with the leading of the Holy Spirit. Read this book. You will be thankful you did.

I am a big fan of what Dustin Dahlin has created — a biblical and practical study of the practice of gratitude on the human life. Courses in spiritual formation and spirituality explore ancient practices of prayer, lectio divina, silence, solitude, and so forth. And rightly so. As a professor of spiritual formation in a graduate program in spiritual formation, I am continually exploring these deep internal practices that open up our souls to the Presence of Living God. Dustin has drawn our attention to another ancient biblical practice that has been proven over and over to impact one’s life powerfully and positively. That practice is thankfulness. While researchers such as Robert Emmons, “a leading scientific expert on the science of gratitude,” have been showing the power of thankfulness to change our lives, Dustin Dahlin has done something equally important in this study: he has shown us how to practice thankfulness. Part of the charm of this study is the vulnerability demonstrated by the author. Thankfulness is discovered in an attic disposing of… "ripe rats," or when facing "chronic stress." Lessons learned while attempting to comfort a child suffering from the "stings of life scrapes" and shared with as much ease as lessons learned from the life of Jesus. I have been touched by this study and am thankful for Dustin Dahlin for reminding me in such a disarming way of the power of this ancient, biblical practice.

"I worked a mediocre job. I experienced a mediocre spiritual life. I preached mediocre sermons. I was tired. My spirits were low - very low. I desperately wanted to experience the glorious joy and depth of relationship with God I had witnessed in others. My glass was half-empty.
Then, as I pulled a rat out of a client’s attic, a friend called me..." (Excerpt from Militant Thankfulness) |
